Cost Containment Strategies Employer Benefits Plans
Speaker: Nick Karls, Attorney, Senior Vice President - Employee Benefits Compliance (Howden)
Session overview:
This presentation explores strategic, legally compliant options for employers seeking to manage escalating health plan costs—particularly high-cost specialty drug claims. It outlines approaches such as carving out specific high-cost medications, implementing ICHRAs, making prescription coverage non-creditable for Medicare Part D, and utilizing Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) plans for targeted populations. The session also addresses key compliance considerations under ERISA, the ACA, Medicare, and the Internal Revenue Code, while highlighting operational risks, employee relations impacts, and vendor-related pitfalls. Attendees will gain practical insight into balancing cost control with regulatory compliance and workforce strategy.
